Brother targets SMEs with new 4-in-1 A3 inkjet printers

Brother has unveiled three new 4-in-1 printers for small businesses that offer A3 printing in colour, plus scan, copy and fax capability, all in a single device costing just a few hundred pounds.

The Brother MFC-J6000 series is designed to meet the needs of users who require A3 colour printing for signs or proofing purposes, but the devices also provide standard A4 printing and can serve a small workgroup as fax and scanner at the same time.

"People were buying our previous model just for the A3 scanning capability, because of the high cost of standalone A3 scanners compared with our MFP, and the new versions are just as affordable," claimed Brother product manager Andy Johnson.

The multi-function inkjet printers are designed to meet a wide range of needs for a workgroup or a small company, Brother said.

For example, the ability to send an A3 fax has proved useful to architects, according to Johnson, while the high-quality colour output means that the MFC-J6000 series can be used in design shops to produce proofs or print flyers.

Brother's three new models all feature automatic duplex printing, even on A3 paper, and can also print full-colour A4 booklet prints on A3 media.
Innovative features include an embedded web server, allowing users to configure the printer and check its status. The scanner function can also scan images directly to a network share, eliminating the need to install software on users' computers.

With a new print head, the line-up also delivers print speeds up to three times faster than the previous generation, at up to 12 images-per-minute in black and white, and 10 in colour.

Brother also claimed lower running costs for the new devices, at a typical 2.91p per page, while new ink cartridges last up to 2,400 pages for black and 1,200 pages for each of the three primary colours. A further reduction in running costs could be made by using alternative inkjet cartridges like those offered by Choice Stationery Supplies when available.

The series consists of the MFC-J6510DW, MFC-J6710DW and MFC-6910DW, which are expected to cost £299.99, £349.99 and £379.99 respectively.

Differences between the three are in paper handling and the user interface; the J6510 model has only a 250 sheet capacity, while the other two can hold 500 sheets. The top-end J6910 sports a touch-screen colour display designed for easier use in office environments.

All three models have USB, Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi for connectivity, and can print directly from Flash memory cards.

Brother said that the J6510 and J6910 are available from today, while the J6710 is coming in March.
