Which Magazine tested our Epson T0791 replacement inkjet cartridges and said "The Think replacement T0791-6 cartridges worked very well, producing prints that were very similar to the OEM ink".

Think replacement inkjet cartridges are available for most leading printers including Epson, Canon, Hewlett Packard, Brother, Lexmark, Dell and Kodak offering savings of up to 90% compared to the high street.

How good are multifunction inkjet printers?

Multifunction printers are gaining ground. The ability to print, scan and copy with just one device sounds like a dream come true. Yet what kind of quality do all-in-one printers really offer in their individual functions? It’s getting more difficult to find printers that just print.

Manufacturers are focusing, instead, on multifunctional devices that can also scan and copy. And prices continue to drop on these all-in-one devices. Yet it’s important to look beyond the purchase price and think about the print costs as well.

Consumers can expect devices in this class to perform the three basic functions, as well as in many cases offering a USB camera port and an integrated card reader plus a 2.5-inch preview display. The digital camera’s storage card is used to store scans or print out photos directly. That saves the need to turn on the computer at all.

For around £100 many manufacturers also offer devices with a WLAN module to allow for wireless printing from laptops and other computers in the household or office. The advantage: fewer cables around the computer and the printer can be placed beyond the immediate range of the desk.

Those willing to invest up to £150 receive larger displays of up to five inches and front or auto document feed, fax functionality and high-quality duplex printing.

The resolution also strongly improves with the price: The Epson Stylus Office SX620FW (from 160 dollars) offers 2400 dpi scanning, earning it top rankings in a test by online portal Druckerchannel.

All of the devices in the lower and mid-range price segment produce comparable print quality, says Sven Lucht from Etest Hardware, a hardware portal.

“The printing technology is pretty mature in all of the devices,” Lucht says. In many cases, the very same printing innards are being used. Differences tend instead to come in print speeds or paper feed, explains Schahin Elahinija from Epson.

The OfficeJet 6500A from HP, for example, takes six seconds to print a page of text of good quality, according to a test by Germany’s Computer-Bild magazine. The magazine declared the winner in its class.

Lorenz sees the entry-level devices as a reasonable choice for those who print infrequently. They are certainly acceptable for office work. Florian Heise, director of the test lab at Druckerchannel, warns about hidden printing costs, however.

“A page of text can cost between 2 and 5 pence, while a colour page in letter-sized format can cost from 30 pence to over a pound,” Heise says. As a rule of thumb: the more expensive the device, the pricier the printing costs.

When making a purchase, the rule to remember is this: think for the long term and not just about the purchase price. Otherwise the decision can come back to haunt you if things get busy and the printer is extraordinarily slow or lacks key functions.

“Extremely cheap combo-devices are often delivered with ink cartridges with little ink,” Lucht explains. In some cases, a mere 200 pages is enough to drain them and require replacements.

Print costs can be reduced by using individual cartridges, Elahinija notes. If one colour is used more frequently — such as for a logo used on every page — then it’s possible to replace just that one empty colour.

Users who want to print photos can also opt for an all-in-one device, Heise says. “All current multifunctional devices can now print photos of a quality comparable with prints from a lab.” More demanding amateur photographers looking for a broader colour pallet or full bleed printing should instead look for specialised photo printers, Lucht says. Yet caution is advised: Many of the cheaper models work with inks that do not hold up well against time.

That means colours that fade faster and blur more easily if the photos are touched after printing.

On the whole, there’s no disadvantage from a print standpoint in using the combo-technology. “The printing innards are on the same level as normal ink-jets,” Lorenz says. And if a multifunction device costs as much as a printer and scanner from a manufacturer, then it’s usually the same components inside, says Uwe Vieths, a hardware expert at Computer-Bild.

The all-in-one devices are less effective when it comes to scanning, the experts warn, although the scan quality is sufficient for household use, says Vieth. That said, don’t expect high-quality scans from these devices. The technology is too simple. An exception is the Canon Pixma MP990 which can also scan slides.

Choice Stationery Supplies sells inkjet cartridges for most leading multifunction printers starting from as low as 99p with free delivery.  For more details please visit http://www.choicestationery.co.uk/

Brother targets SMEs with new 4-in-1 A3 inkjet printers

Brother has unveiled three new 4-in-1 printers for small businesses that offer A3 printing in colour, plus scan, copy and fax capability, all in a single device costing just a few hundred pounds.

The Brother MFC-J6000 series is designed to meet the needs of users who require A3 colour printing for signs or proofing purposes, but the devices also provide standard A4 printing and can serve a small workgroup as fax and scanner at the same time.

"People were buying our previous model just for the A3 scanning capability, because of the high cost of standalone A3 scanners compared with our MFP, and the new versions are just as affordable," claimed Brother product manager Andy Johnson.

The multi-function inkjet printers are designed to meet a wide range of needs for a workgroup or a small company, Brother said.

For example, the ability to send an A3 fax has proved useful to architects, according to Johnson, while the high-quality colour output means that the MFC-J6000 series can be used in design shops to produce proofs or print flyers.

Brother's three new models all feature automatic duplex printing, even on A3 paper, and can also print full-colour A4 booklet prints on A3 media.
Innovative features include an embedded web server, allowing users to configure the printer and check its status. The scanner function can also scan images directly to a network share, eliminating the need to install software on users' computers.

With a new print head, the line-up also delivers print speeds up to three times faster than the previous generation, at up to 12 images-per-minute in black and white, and 10 in colour.

Brother also claimed lower running costs for the new devices, at a typical 2.91p per page, while new ink cartridges last up to 2,400 pages for black and 1,200 pages for each of the three primary colours. A further reduction in running costs could be made by using alternative inkjet cartridges like those offered by Choice Stationery Supplies when available.

The series consists of the MFC-J6510DW, MFC-J6710DW and MFC-6910DW, which are expected to cost £299.99, £349.99 and £379.99 respectively.

Differences between the three are in paper handling and the user interface; the J6510 model has only a 250 sheet capacity, while the other two can hold 500 sheets. The top-end J6910 sports a touch-screen colour display designed for easier use in office environments.

All three models have USB, Ethernet and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi for connectivity, and can print directly from Flash memory cards.

Brother said that the J6510 and J6910 are available from today, while the J6710 is coming in March.

Are inkjet printers and office machines really boring?

Almost three quarters of office workers think their computer is the most stylish piece of equipment on their desk, according to a new report by Lexmark International.

The printing solutions provider found that 72% of the 450 people polled said their computer was the most stylish amongst a host of other devices commonly found within the office.

Items such as fax machines and printers were ranked as the least stylish with one in four participants admitting that they would hide their fax machine from others due to its ungainly size or outdated look.

Two fifths of respondents said that black was their favourite colour when it comes to equipment design – a quarter preferred white and 23% opted for silver.

Two thirds of people said they would be willing to pay more for a piece of equipment that looked fashionable, signalling the rising importance of aesthetics within the modern workplace.

Steve Purdy, country general manager at Lexmark UK, said: “We’re entering a new era of style on the desktop where sleek looks and design meet advanced technology”.

The survey also highlighted how people go about making decisions on which types of equipment to buy. Functionality and ease-of-use were ranked at the top of the table followed by price and stylish design.

Lexmark questioned participants from eight countries across Europe when compiling the data, which suggests that the average office worker’s interest in desktop appearances is not confined to the UK.

Brother MFC-J6910DW review

The price tag may put off casual buyers, but the Brother MFC-J6910DW A3 inkjet multifunction printer offers high quality and extensive features.

While every year sees huge numbers of photo enthusiasts snapping up new printers in order to display their best shots in full A4 technicolour, wider- format A3 printers remain relatively thin on the ground. On one level this is surprising, given the extra impact of an A3 print. But, given the stubbornly high prices of A3 models, their relative scarcity is rather more understandable.

This particular model, the most expensive of Brother's new range of A3 models, is unlikely to change perceptions - even if the Brother MFC-J6910DW's quality and extensive features will be enough to win it support regardless.

There's little Brother can do to hide the large bulk required of an A3, and the Brother MFC-J6910DW is a substantial model, even if its understated black casing means that it won't prove too inconspicuous. It's fairly heavy, although taking out the paper trays makes it rather easier to transport.

The front of the Brother MFC-J6910DW is adorned with a battery of useful buttons, while the colourful 3.3in touch-sensitive TFT lets you tap into the Brother's many hidden functions. The interface isn't quite as easy to grasp as we would have liked, but we were still able to plug in USB pen drives and memory cards, and use the TFT to select, fine-tune and print our images without turning on the PC. Brother has tried to make the TFT design as attractive as possible (with a particularly soothing picture of a beach showing up when the printer isn't in use), although a dash more colour quality wouldn't have gone amiss. Nonetheless, for PC-free use, the Brother fares well.

When an A3 printer will be called upon to double up as a normal A4 model, the need to switch papers size can cause inconvenience. Thankfully, the Brother MFC-J6910DW avoids this by providing not one but two 250-sheet paper trays. This makes it pretty impressive when it comes to paper handling, even if we found that, strangely, the printer was slower when directed to use the second tray.

Connectivity is first-class, and the Brother MFC-J6910DW offers support for both Wi-Fi (up to 802.11n) and wired ethernet. This places it ahead of many office lasers in terms of their ability to slip seamlessly into any business or home office environment. The addition of faxing and copying facilities further increases the Brother's business allure, and the robust scanning component is of good quality. In truth, there are few functions this device can't handle.

Brother MFC-J6910DW: Print performance
It's not quite as versatile when it comes to printing, though, and the Brother MFC-J6910DW works much better as a colour A3 printer than it does as an A4. It's solid as an A4 text printer, going from 13.3ppm in its fastest mode (where text is adequately defined, though light) down to 9.9ppm and 3.8ppm in the normal and top modes.

The middle mode produces text that is dark, but a little blurred around the edges, while the top mode is actually of good quality, with dark and slightly thick, but still clean characters. In inkjet terms you can coax good text from the Brother MFC-J6910DW, although any decent laser will offer considerably more speed. Automatic duplexing is provided, although this is rather too slow, dropping the speed by almost 60%.

When it comes to A4 colour graphics, the results lack a little quality. There's little wrong with the speed, and the Brother MFC-J6910DW ranges from 9.1ppm in the fastest mode to a still decent 4.6 and 3.2ppm at the normal and best settings. However, while the fastest mode produces very pleasing colour for draft settings, the results don't get that much better in the top modes. Dithering is a problem, while the palette remained a little too light and lacking in vitality even after we had fiddled with the colour settings. You can improve the quality with practice, but the Brother doesn't produce the most compelling colour A4 prints.

The Brother MFC-J6910DW is considerably better at A3, though, where the prints contain far more texture and shading. The colours are still a touch light, but remain rather more compelling in the middle and higher modes than with A4. Most graphics details were handled competently, although there were still a few issues with dithering. Nonetheless, the A3 output is rather good.

Speed is very solid too, ranging from 3.6ppm in the case of the fastest mode, to 2.5ppm and 2.1ppm at the normal and higher quality settings. You've got to expect A3 to be rather slower, but these speeds are very much in line with wide-format models we've seen previously. The Brother MFC-J6910DW did make a few annoying noises while printing A3, and the slightly offputting high-pitched beeping kept making us think the printer was throwing up an error.

The Brother MFC-J6910DW's running costs are very decent for an inkjet, and the high-yield cartridges combined with economy options produce low costs per page for an inkjet.

Choice Stationery Supplies learnt today that if you live somewhere that experiences freezing winters, you may think twice before having inkjet cartridges shipped to your home. However, cold weather should not affect inkjet cartridges, even if the ink sits outside overnight.

Identification

Chemicals inside inkjet cartridges are used to suspend the pigment so it is spread evenly throughout inside. These same substances also stop the ink from freezing solid.

Thawing

If your inkjet cartridge does freeze from being left in cold weather, allow it to warm up before attempting to print with it. Once the ink returns to room temperature, it should be good to use.

Warning

While the ink will be completely fine, a frozen inkjet cartridge may affect other parts of the device. There are electronic components on the cartridge that interact with the printer and any condensation that appears while the cartridge defrosts may cause these electrodes to malfunction.

So rest assured should we have another downfall of snow in the UK that should your order of inkjets get delayed slightly in the post this shouldn't cause any problems....apart from of course the postman trying to deliver them.
